This new trio is formed by Clemens Salesny, Woody Schabata and Raphael Preuschl and premiered very successfully at JazzWerkstatt Wien in the WUK Museum. Each of the three master musicians adds to the repertoire of the ensemble utilizing the unusual combination of alto saxophone or bass clarinet, vibraphone and double bass.

(...) Die Musik auf dieser CD ist: fantastisch. Sie ist cool, ohne kühl zu sein, sie ist intellektuell, ohne kopflastig zu sein, sie ist emotional, ohne kindisch zu sein – und sie ist durch und durch europäisch, ohne jedoch das US-amerikanische Jazz-Erbe aus den Ohren zu verlieren. Die vier kommunizieren auf einem so hohen Niveau miteinander, wie man es nur noch selten zu hören bekommt: Die Partner auf Augenhöhe im Blick behaltend, entwickelt man ein Geflecht aus Improvisations-Ideen – mal schlicht und einfach gestaltet, mal komplex und raffiniert entworfen, stets riskant, frisch und frech gespielt. Ein großer Wurf, der Salesny, Schabata, Preuschl und Joos hier geglückt ist.

Ausgangspunkte sind Startpunkte einer improvisatorischen Reise ins Unbekannte. Ausgangspunkt waren Sound und Besetzung der Miles-Davis-Bands der frühen 70er Jahre, die Clemens Salesny den atmosphärischen Hintergrund für seine Electric Band liefern. Doch Clemens Salesny nimmt nur die Aufbruchsstimmung mit, um im Kollektiv expressive Energie zu entwickeln, die in jedem Augenblick in angespannte Stille kippen könnte. Dem Zuhörer bleibt die Aufgabe konzentriert zu folgen und – ebenso intensiv mit der Band mit zu reisen.

Even though they had known each other for a while and played together on various occations, it was not until the urgency of a missing rhythm section that they finally came together on stage at a late-night-session. Since then, originals are the basis for their improvisations although they don´t leave out an occasional Monk-tune or an "all-time-favourite" like Strayhorns "Lush Life".

After eight years of taking chances making music as a Duo, Salesny/Wenger are ready to put their repertoire into a new context. The two "Clemenses" who are responsible for compositions and improvisation material are now faced with a musical counterpart: Lukas König, probably Austria´s youngest improvisation talent, and the versatile double bass player Christian Wendt are not in the role of a conventional rhythm section - they create a true counterpoint to the Duo pieces. Compositions by Clemens Salesny and Clemens Wenger, Austrian legends like Hans Koller or Harry Pepl, Viennese Folk songs as well as music by Mingus and Monk are the starting basis for improvisation with a playful and courageous approach being the central theme of the program.

"JazzWerkstatt Wien" (Jazzworkshop Vienna) was founded in November
2004 on the initiative of Clemens Wenger together with Clemens Salesny,
Wolfgang Schiftner, Daniel Riegler, Bernd Satzinger und Peter Rom. "JazzWerkstatt
Wien" is a platform established by musicians designed to provide
a sizable group of young artists the opportunity to develop and present
ideas. In addition to various activities throughout the whole year (CD-Presentations,
Festivals, Radio Shows) especially the "JazzWorkshops" 2005
- 2008 enjoyed great media attention and attracted a numerous audience.
Mit der Jazzwerkstatt wird Österreich zu einem wichtigen
Standortfaktor in Sachen progressiven Jazz- und Kunstgeschehens!
